Mark Egan is the grand master of the fretless bass. Over the course of his Grammy-winning, five-decade career as a top New York City bassist he has pushed the instrument’s boundaries across the musical spectrum, from #1 hit songs and albums with the likes of Sting, Joan Osborne, Sophie B. Hawkins and Arcadia, to seminal jazz and fusion recordings with Pat Metheny, the Gil Evans Orchestra and his own band, Elements, to his landmark solo sides. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Mark began on trumpet at age 10 before switching to bass, at 16. Enrolling in the University of Miami School of Music, he studied with Jaco Pastorius and connected with Metheny and drummer Danny Gottlieb to change the face of jazz via the Pat Metheny Group. Soon after, he founded the groundbreaking unit Elements with Gottlieb and launched his solo career, eventually forming his own label, Wavetone Records. Mark continues to answer the super-sideman call in the studio and on tour, while regularly releasing cutting-edge projects on Wavetone, including 2014’s About Now and 2015’s Direction Home, both trio dates with Gottleib and keyboardist Mitchel Forman.
