This pack is the first in Lincoln Goines’ seven part series Working With the Language of Rhythm: Afro-Cuban and Brazilian Groove Concepts for Bass. In lesson one, Lincoln gives a brief overview of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music before introducing the clave, a fundamentally important rhythm in these styles of music. Be sure to spend time familiarizing yourself with the clave before moving on to learn some of the bass lines that can accompany it: the tumbao, son montuno, and guajira. In Practice Mode, the examples can be slowed down until they are at a comfortable speed and then, as you become familiar with these grooves, sped back up again to Lincoln’s tempo and beyond!

Be sure to check out the rest of Lincoln’s series that takes you from the very basics of Afro-Cuban bass playing in Packs 1 and 2, all the way through advanced odd meter synthetic claves in Pack 7.
